Thank you so much for this great commentary on our survey! I was similarly shocked when we got the results back. I think one of the core problems is that we’ve been talking about “diversity”, and people rightfully look around and see people who are dissimilar to themselves (so we look disingenuous). We absolutely must be more specific, and say that we’re after “representative diversity”, or that we are seeking to stop the systematic exclusion of women, of Black and Hispanic people, etc.

I think that being more precise, by communicating more effectively, there are many allies out there who will be very happy to join the cause.
